XJ900 dimensions/specs

Post by neale » Wed May 29, 2013 4:48 pm

Could someone here ( yes, I'm lookin' at you Andrew ;^) provide the dimensions for the early '80's XJ900 tanks, and also, any indication of how easy it is to source a decent one, please?

The one in particular that caught my eye was the 1983 XJ900R Seca, it LOOKS like the same tank was used for a while across a few XJ Seca models, is that right?

BTW: Reason I'm asking is that I wanna replace the rather massive tank on the XT600Z, I do have an XV1100 tank here, but one thing I noted was as well as being tall, the XT800Z tank is rather long.

From the pictures I've found, the XJ900 Seca tank looks a similar length, so if that's correct and they're obtainable, I'm thinking that it could be a good replacement.

One advantage of not having the money to do anything right now, I have time to do my research and try and find out what will work ;^)

8) Thought my ears were burning.....

I'll sort out some dimensions for you. Yes the tank remaind the same right through the years untill they became the Diversion.

I'm heading to Geelong June long weekend , I could drop a loaner into you to try if you want.
Cheers

Thanks Andrew,

Thanks for the offer, but as I mentioned I don't have the money to do anything at the moment, and as the bike's stashed at a mate's place until we make room at my place to fit it in, it's best for both of us that we don't draw attention to it by hauling it out, as there's a fair bit of my other stuff that we may have to move, too ;^)

I'm basically trying to step through what needs to be done in my head, and when I went looking for a tank that may be the right length, a familiar bike popped up ;^)

So if you could get me the dimensions when you have the time, that'd be great, thanks.

Ta,

Initially, no, the plan up front is to get a 1 3/4" shorter rear shock made up to drop the rear a bit over 5", if my calcs are right that will push the rake out about 7-8 degrees and lower the front by 2 1/2", and get it headed in the right direction.

Down the track the plan is for the XVS1100 version of the raked tripletrees you have, XVS1100 fork lowers/calipers etc, was thinking 2" longer fork tubes but I'm not sure that would improve things. Trail appears to go out to nearly 8" with the rear dropped, the raked triple trees should pull it back to a more workable figure, as well as dropping the front another 2" (and being in line with what I want).

The primary one would be the overall length, to determine how close it is to the length of the tank of the XTZ, but if you could include the tunnel width and height front and rear and tank width front and rearm that'd be great Andrew.

Thanks,

NB: OK, I'm sure no-one's thought about the Tenere tank other than "that's no moon, it's a fuel tank", but one of the guys put up pics of his rebuild thread that explain the size (and the fact that it's only got 24L capacity).

Image

The airbox on these bikes is as big as the tanks on some bikes, that's a CR250Z tank sitting in the cavity in the pic.

Yep, a replacement tank is DEFINITELY happening.
