not a chopper but .......

Postby Rayman » Tue May 16, 2017 1:10 pm

Ok guys - been working on this in the background for the last couple of months -
I started out with the need to rebuild the stock dash for the vf750 - but didn't want to change the look - so I ended up designing and making anelectronic replacement -
the meters are all driven by dash stepper motors - as used in all the modern electronic dashed - with the displays using OLED white displays -

attached is a photo of the vf750 unit - excuse the overexposure - phone doesn't like the bright displays.

From there I decided how about other bikes where there is a desire to keep the original "gauges" but replace / upgrade the internals....

So this led to the concept of a generic gauge -
it has two OLED displays -
these can be set as ODOMETER, TRIP, FUEL, TEMP, VOLTAGE (+gear) OIL PRESSURE
and one stepper driven needle -
this can be set to TACHO or SPEEDO-

All inputs are measured by the gauge -
there are some jumpers on the back to configure dipsplay coice -
there is a software (serial terminal via usb) that allows editing of settings -
wheel circumference - metric or imperial units , starting odometer reading.
the FUEL,TEMP,SPEED and TACHO displays are configurable throug this terminal - there is a start and end point and angles as well as the facility to correct gauge linearity -

This allows any existing gauge faceplate to be matched in the settings.
the base body size is 75mm - but comes in any size needed to fit the gauge as required.
the gauge incorporates LED lighting - as the top 3d printed layer is transclucent.

So on to a setup to illustrate - ( i know its an ugly cx500 standard dash but ....)

below is shown a before and after of the good old standard CX dash -
reuses the faceplates and needles, buckets etc.

the working unit - set as odo/trip on the speedo and voltmeter / gear at top of tacho and fuel on the bottom.

i would expect this to be more applicable to the custom / deluxe gauges
and in particular to other bikes where an upgrade but original appearance might be sought - eg cb750s and goldwings

The gauges are not honda specific - they can be used on any brand

I need to do some document writing etc before they become available through the website and ebay - but just a heads up -
another option in the mix.

standard sizes will be to suit 3", 3 1/8, 3 3/8 , 4"
the tacho runs of the ignition -
the speedo uses a hall sensor -
oil pressure if desired - 150psi piezo pressure sensor (about $15 US)
temp and fuel senders as usual -
gear if required calculated on rpm/speed ratio
now has a clock option also

Ok -
so where to from here -
these will give you a possible option to run a new electronic gauge with some extra info / in the old gauge housing and faceplate so you can maintain your original
instrument look rather than some of the ugly Chinese dashes.

I'm looking to get a few gauges sets together for examples to show in the manual and for the marketing shots -

I'm not limited to honda - any brand is workable - particuarly looking for some Cb style gauges - (non working prefered as they can be turned into working :))

let me know thoughts / and if you have something that might suit.

Wow..! You've been a busy boy, Ray. Love what you've done to the CX dash clocks. Also looks good on the VF set.
Great stuff.

Don't understand much of what you said, but has a lot of potential for old bikes gauges. Great work.

Here's a more standard set of clocks to give you an idea -
this a v45 magna set - odo / trip on the speedo -
volt / gear and a clock (new addition) on the tacho side.

What operates the speedo? Could a small digital display of speed and odometer be made to fit in a small space to mount in/on handlebar/handlebar mount?

speedo operates off a small hall sensor - I actually use the stock speedo cable drive - remove the cable - fit a magnet to the rotating blade and then use a 3d printed part like the original cable end to hold the small
hall sensor - and run the cable (3 wires) up to the speedo.

anything is possible - but if you just wanted small digital speedo - then this unit comes well respected.

Its not worth me trying to compete in the arena with the Chinese aftermarkets - but for keeping the original look and gauge bodies I can do something.

Checked out the link. So what would the roughly ball park approximate cost be for just a speedo and odo in a supplied mini 60mm speedo case? I would prefer to run it off the rear wheel via a wire if possible. I may be asking the impossible, but thought I'd ask anyway. The bicycle speedos run off a small magnet on the brake rotor or rim.
