In June 2011, 7 year old friends, Rueben & Sidney were both diagnosed
with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia; a rare, acute cancer of the blood
and bone marrow. Both were acutely ill and admitted to the Royal Chil-dren’s Hospital in the same week.
Sidney needed emergency surgery to remove fluid from her lungs and
heart, spending four days in intensive care. Rueben’s cancer had also
spread, forming a large mass around his heart and throat. Both children
began intensive chemotherapy immediately, coincidentally meeting on
occasion over several weeks. Around March this year, both children
moved onto maintenance chemotherapy. Sidney will continue to have
chemo every day, with monthly visits to hospital for another 18 months.
Rueben will endure another two and a half years. Both children are re-turning to school and normal life as much as possible. Despite the chem-otherapy leaving them at risk of infections and exhausted, the children
exhibit incredible maturity, bravery and unconditional trust.
