engine number of shovel

engine number of shovel

ok..i have a 77 shovel..but engine is not original...and when i look up the numbers it says its a sporty engine...but its not....so am i looking at wrong thing....engine number starts with 4A , which is code for a 1000 sporty....? last 2 digits are H4 which means its a 74....so..anyone got more info for me....did sporty engines in 74 have separate gearbox?...i didnt think so....my engine is def a stand alone until...no chopped, not a sporty engine....cheers

Sounds like it may have been re stamped, Ive had a couple with sus numbers one pan had hummer #s.
Got any pics of them? harley has a certain type of stamp and most restamps don't use Harley type numbers.

4A is for XLCH's specifically. If your bike is an FL the numbers should start with 1A or 2A or if it's an FX 2C or 9D. There are other starting codes for the more obscure BT's.

If it was me, I'd get this sorted before you dump to much money into this thing. One switched-on copper and you won't be collecting $200.

It's been regoed thru three different owners like this...I've got all the old rego and rwc papers...this number is on the right side at front. I've been told another number is on primary side but I cannot see it

whats the frame number a shovelhead one it may be registered under the frame numbers !

On rego papers it has frame and eng numbers listed

Just because its regoed with those numbers does'nt make them correct.
For peace of mind I would change cases, or what ever to get the right numbers.
But you may never have any dramas.

There are "belly" numbers on the bottom of each case. These will be the same, but all they identify is that the cases were assembled together at the factory.
