Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Thanks Prof. Another interesting note... I have ridden with my 8 over narrow glide for approx 6 years, and have grown to love the way it handled with quite a lot of trail. The springer now has significantly less trail so it still feels a bit weird to ride. The dynamics of a springer are also totally...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

I still need to sort out my front guard. I have the guard in stock but need to make the mounts for it. It’ll clamp to the front legs with some thin rubber to prevent marking the chrome. I hate the look front guards so the idea is to have it fitted for riding but easily removable for shows etc. Unfor...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Hi folks. Pretty much done with this. Got some pics to post but will be a brief post. Machined some tophats for the top of the rebound springs https://i.imgur.com/KAJ8kRT.jpg https://i.imgur.com/oNY2JX5.jpg New stem bearings greased up and installed with new chrome dust shields. https://i.imgur.com/...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Thanks guys. It happens to the best of us, and it’s not always our fault, honest!!! If I’m working for a short period in the shed I’ll often wear work gloves. I prefer the bare hands approach for dexterity (unless welding or doing heavy grinding) but it needs to be a full day to justify the clean up...

Thankyou Jon, glad you like it. It’s all a learning curve and the best way to learn is just to have a go! Re: Invigorating ride...

And forgot to mention, the whole day started off with a Completely dead battery, thanks to my absent mindedness leaving the ignition on last time I was doing something to it. Easily fixed with a bit of juice and some wire, the joys of a well tuned, easy starting kick only bike! Didn’t even need to r...

Re: Invigorating ride...

Great recap and some cool photos. Nice to catch up. I may be tall and not quite an athlete, but that rear shot demonstrates how narrow Harleys of the era can be. Really enjoyed a casual ride, who cares if cars were flying past us at speed. Tend not to ride much during summer so this was the first de...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

The end is in sight folks Pics to show but brief words from my weary head. All back from the welder, mostly TIG Brazed. A really good process as it has such low heat input and almost zero heat affected zone. It is not suitably for everything but the design of this springer is perfect for it, as the ...

Re: Springer build with a difference...

Great progress! It’s going to be a radical springer that’s for sure.

Coincidentally I also machined my rocker bushers today from Delrin, although I went with 1 top hat bush from the inside and a plain washer type bush on the outside. Your shouldered design is better.

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

For Brake arm I am going to use some Heim joints, but with a bit of custom massaging. This is custom after all! I intend on setting the distance the same between pivot point and anchor point, (rear rocker pivot to fork leg boss / front axle to drum brake boss equidistant) Hadn’t considered the lengt...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Howdy folks I don’t know how many of you are following this, but I will continue to post progress regardless. No work on the springer as such, its been away getting welded and still needs a couple of things. Instead I have turned to the brake plate. My original one was too bulky in one particular ar...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Final spring bridge shaped, mill scale remove and sanded smooth. https://i.imgur.com/0TPsbiO.jpg Using the front leg spacer I previously described, I added some stepped ends to locate the dropouts. Using a long bolt thru the centre pulls everything square, and of course the width came out spot on. h...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Thanks El Skitzo!!! Glad some people are enjoying it. Does take a fair bit of extra time to take all the photos and write up the posts. And what’s this? Another one! 2 posts in 3 days!! Just some quick bit of shed therapy after work today. Here’s a little bung I made for the brake arm. I will likely...

Re: Victor’s Shovel Chopper

Just quickly whilst it’s still in my brain, the chromer said there’s no need to fully polish parts, as it will be triple plate chrome (copper > nickel > chrome plate). A smooth finish (e.g. 400 grit) with no visible scratches will come up fine. Having said that, I’m really getting to the end of my t...
